He rolled out of the bush, pulling on its roots to free himself from beneath the Jori's deadweight, then collected his items. His belt was now weighed down by an axe and a knife, but it was a good feeling. The kind that made him eager to smash things with the sharp end of his blades. Two days ago, he was a prisoner, unable to even look at the guards for fear of being hit in the face or worse, tossed outside the walls to sleep the night in fear of any number of predators making him into a meal. Now, he was free and armed, though most definitely lost, and most certainly outnumbered.
He discarded the extra blow dart gun and pouch, but added the darts to make nine in the one pouch, which he tied around his belt for easy access. By his math, a full canteen of tea and a v-herb wouldn't get him to the max 185 HP, so he ate the other herb just to be sure.
The explosions had been silent for some time. In fact, he realized they'd stopped shortly before the first Jori had chased him. He wondered if his parents were okay. Mom?
He Telescoped for her as he watched his SP slow at 47, while his HP passed 160. The progress of both produced great relief.
He wasn't surprised when she didn't respond. He let go of the Telescope and the SP climbed back toward 40. He could try and find them, or continue on left to rescue Adi, Carl, and Perisene. That the Jori had revealed their location meant they were confident of recapturing him if he went that way.
After a long swig of the sweet tea, he took a makeshift path through the thick bushes rooted at the top of the ridge, chewing on the jerky and scanning for any Jori that might be in hiding.
He eventually made it back to the slope where the explosion had separated him from the now-dead Jori. Still no explosions, and no Jori hiding behind the boulders.
Emmit took the original path up the mountain, feeling the pull in his leg muscle with every stride. At a boulder up ahead lay three dead Jori, in craters that pocked the soil. He drank the last of his tea canteen, then popped the last of the jerky into his mouth as he walked closer. As he neared the boulder, he used his Scan into the trees bordering the path, and then to the dead bodies. His skill sense picked up a bracelet worn by one of the dead Jori. He ran over and knelt down next to the dead Jori. It was Adi's red mage starter bracelet. Emmit wiped the blood off it and stuffed it in his pocket.
